12.3.13

It's going be a long week of spring break.

I made my first self portrait out of boredom, though it was mainly to practice using my camera. I'm not sure if I did it "right". I used way too much baby oil because I was trying to go for the black-skinned shiny look, but I guess it's not really a good idea when a) you're not that dark, and b) you don't know what you're doing. I wanted to use gold flakes on my face. Didn't plan that out well either. So I let Photoshop do the rest.

I've been really captivated by Nadia Sarwar's blog (FrouFrouu)  as of late. I usually just take a peek and nod in approval when her posts show up on my feed, but I took precious time to scour her ENTIRE archive, and she is one of the most talented photographers out there. But you probably already knew that.

  1. I am also like you about Froufrouu, I don't have much to say but I find myself spending a huge amount of time on her blog.

As for your picture, no problem with baby oil when it's in B&W, it makes the image more dramatic, but the combination of both coloured and B&W images are a good idea in my opinion.

I like your photos posts, it's good to see you "in practice" mode.

Thanks a lot! I'm going to be in practice mode or a long, long time, I can guarantee it. ♥

  3. Love FrouFrouu as well, I wish I had that dark mysterious thing going on in my photos that she does so perfectly with hers.

Great work for practice mode. Maybe you could try shooting them next time near a window with some natural light, I feel like that would make some beautiful shots in black and white.

Thank you so much for the tip! One of the buildings on campus (the fine arts building, coincidentally) has huge windows, and generally great shooting locations. I'm just really scared to leave my dorm hallway because I freak out when other people are watching me photograph myself or if they're photographing me. Hopefully I'll get over it though!

I completely understand, that's why I end up doing most of my shoots in my room or out in nature. Try to shoot on weekends when you think no one would be there or if your really dedicated you can always wake up really early and get shots before anyone is even on campus. I'm probably to lazy for that last one though...
